An estimated ten trillion insects and spiders live on Earth. And they all reproduce. But how? Now, researchers are studying how bugs have sex. The conclusion, so far? It's complicated!

Extreme, fascinating, exciting: This is how researchers describe the love games that insects and spiders play. While an estimated ten trillion insects and spiders live on Earth, we know very little about how they reproduce.

Now, scientists around the world have started observing these animals during sexual intercourse. Their conclusion: it's complex! And sometimes, it’s also risky. Take field crickets in Hawaii: The crickets’ calls are meant to attract desired mates, but predators hear them, too. And what happens when mutations rob crickets of their ability to send out sexual signals at all? Then there are spiders. Many people know that spider sex can be fatal, and that the female black widow is considered a killer. What’s the truth behind this image? The astonishing answer provides insights into the behavior of spiders. The black widow's web functions as both a trap and a communication system. The males spin "highways" to the females, which their competitors can also use, in yet another aspect of the race to procreate.

Spain is observing three days of mourning after flash flooding killed at least 95 people. Dozens are still missing and the death toll is expected to rise. The eastern regions of Murcia and Valencia were hardest hit. Huge storms were triggered by a so-called "cold drop." That happens when a cold Atlantic low-pressure system colides with warm Mediterranean air. Muddy torrents swept away vehicles and ripped apart homes.

Critics of growth want to bring the economy into harmony with the environment and social well-being. They see a world that functions without constantly wanting more. But is that realistic?

Hamburg chefs Marianus von Hörsten and Aaron Levi Hasenpusch have decided to turn their back on the idea that a business should always be growing. Their restaurant is closed on weekends. It means more free time and less stress, but also less turnover and less income. For them, it’s feasible.

Otto Fuchs produces specialized metal components for the automotive and aviation industries. His company is aiming for "green growth" — to grow while operating in a climate-friendly way. But this is no easy task. In Germany, climate protection and the transition to green energy cost a lot of money.

Ulrike Herrmann, author of Das Ende des Kapitalismus (The End of Capitalism) is skeptical about green growth. She says it’s not possible, and advocates instead for "degrowth" in order to save the planet. Restructuring the economy would consume vast amounts of clean energy, and Germany simply couldn’t install that many wind turbines. In other words, we’ll have to rein ourselves in.

After the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland introduced a new economic evaluation: the "Wellbeing Economy". As well as measuring things that have a price tag, it also takes into account welfare and quality of life, including access to housing and green spaces, as well as gender equality. Negative factors like environmental degradation and the consumption of resources are also included. Kristín Vala Ragnarsdóttir is professor of sustainability science at the University of Iceland. She’s committed to the idea of a sustainable economy.

Nicolás Maduro has been president of Venezuela since 2013. He rules the country, which faces grave political and economic problems, with an iron fist. Despite massive criticism from home and abroad, Maduro is clinging to power. Successfully, so far.

Venezuela experienced many dramatic events in recent decades. There was the "Bolivarian Revolution" started by Hugo Chávez, who was elected president in 1998 and introduced a socialist system to the country. There were also attempted coups, violent protests, and severe economic crises — despite the fact that Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.

After the illness and death of Hugo Chávez in 2013, Nicolás Maduro succeeded as president. The former bus driver and socialist set himself the goal of continuing Venezuela's socialist revolution, at any cost.

His rule has been authoritarian. Corruption within Venezuela's state elite and mismanagement are widespread. Years of poor economic decisions have driven the country to ruin under Maduro's presidency. Millions of people in Venezuela are impoverished, and many have fled to neighboring countries.

Yet despite opposition attempts to force him out, Maduro has survived. He was declared the winner in Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections in July - this, although the parliament had tried to remove him from office in 2017 already. People took to the streets to demand his resignation back then and this year again.

However, none of this seems to have affected Maduro - and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the resulting rift between Russia and North America and Europe, the international geopolitical situation has changed. The world is more desperate for oil than ever; and a vast quantity of oil is lying dormant underground in Venezuela.

Every year, one million migrants harvest Europe’s fields, picking the produce that fills supermarkets. That bounty of fruits and vegetables comes at a cost – as most of the harvesters live and work in precarious conditions.

Among them is Seydou from Mali. He harvests oranges in southern Italy from December to March – working without a contract. Whenever inspectors come, Seydou has to hide. “The legal documents... it’s a big problem for everyone,” he says.

Seydou’s story reflects the struggles of many harvesters. In Italy alone, there are between 400,000 to 500,000 migrant workers in the agricultural sector. The oranges in Calabria are mainly picked by migrants from African countries. Many of them have no residence papers or health insurance. They generally work without contracts and don’t even earn minimum wage.

Over in Spain, we meet Bahija from Morrocco. She picks strawberries in the Huelva region and says her employer retains two weeks of wages to keep pickers like her from taking time off. Such exploitation is common according to José Antonio, chairman of the Andalusian Farm Workers Union in Huelva province. “In Huelva, it becomes apparent that Europe is driven by markets, not people,” he says.

We also meet Kirti in Nepal as he sets out on his quest to get to Portugal. He borrows approximately €14,000 to be able to make the journey and pick blueberries. Despite having to leave his wife and young son behind, he says Portugal is a “dream destination for many Nepalese” because pickers receive papers and can work legally. But the entrance for Asian pickers is not regulated – not in Portugal nor in other European countries. Such gaps are filled by informal networks, which demand huge sums for their services, such as the one Kirti paid, and put the pickers into so-called “debt-bondage.”

“The Pickers” is a powerful journey through Europe’s fields. Meet the individuals who sustain our food systems, and discover the true human cost that keeps European supermarkets stacked with fruits and vegetables.

Journalist Sean Langan reports from the Donbass region, an area annexed by Moscow. He meets those living on the front lines, as well as soldiers fighting for Russia. It’s a rare look at a world usually inaccessible to Western media.

Together with his colleague — Donetsk-based translator Sascha — Langan goes behind the front lines of the Russian war in Ukraine. Despite working under the watchful eyes of Russian authorities, he manages to gain deep insights into the merciless war of attrition on the front. The conflict has already claimed an estimated hundreds of thousands of lives, and this film shows Moscow’s relentless determination to fight on, regardless of its own losses.

The Organic Gold Hunters of the Himalayas | Free Documentary

A Year in Tibet - Life and Survival in an Ultra Remote Town: https://youtu.be/LkTvsN7LQ-Y

Every spring, in a remote part of Nepal, tens of thousands of villagers leave their dwellings for a dangerous trek to the Himalayas, in order to collect Yarsagumbu, a caterpillar fungus. This peculiar hybrid between plant and insect is being sold in China up to $60 000 per kilo (or 2.2 lbs), because of its medical wonders worth more than its weight in gold.

Suga Lal too leaves his fields, which scarcely provide with enough to survive, along with his wife and his two sons to join a group of Yarsagumbu pickers. But this hidden treasure is rare and difficult to find. They will have to climb high up the mountains to harvest enough for the whole year.

In the meantime, Dhanchandra, who works for a rich Yarsagumbu dealer based in Kathmandu, travels from camp to camp, with wads of cash, in order to buy the best specimen. It is a dangerous job - he could get robbed any time. Often, the harvest has to be escorted by soldiers to Kathmandu, where it is shipped to Hong Kong pharmacies.

From the snow-capped summits of the Himalayas to luxurious penthouses in Hong Kong, from the hands of poor Nepalese to those of the wealthiest Chinese consumers, experience the Himalayan Organic Gold Rush.

Sextortion was invented by one woman in the Philippines, Maria Caparas. She turned the idea of making friends online and video chats into a clever, evil scam that would not exist without social media.

There’s a dark side to the internet, and you probably don’t even know it exists. Go behind the positive veneer of social media, communication apps and platforms that have made our lives easier and more connected, and you’ll find criminals using the same apps and platforms to run illicit and dangerous activities. Sextortion syndicates target global victims through social media. Illegal wildlife trades thrive on social consumer marketplaces. Digital black markets operate anonymously using software designed for press privacy and freedom. Secret child pornography rings run rampant in secret, closed groups and private chats.

VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Make in India was one of the most ambitious initiatives of the BJP, and it's been 10 years since Make in India was launched! Back then it was bragged as the policy that would change the face of India and turn us into a manufacturing powerhouse.
But did it really happen?
In the last decade India’s manufacturing has increased by 5.5%. And, today, India is manufacturing everything from smartphones to solar panels, semiconductor chips to electric vehicles, you name it, we make it in India!!!
So it all looks great right???
But What if I told you that make in India is a failure???
Sounds unbelievable right??
Well, unfortunately, it is true to a large extent!! Look at this,
Make in India was started with 4 important objectives
We wanted to decrease our dependence on imports but if you see the numbers, so have our imports decreased no!!
If we see imports as a % of GDP, in 2013-14, it was 25.95% but by 2023 it was 23. 96%,it has slightly decreased! And through manufacturing the govt of India in 2014, set a target to achieve a manufacturing growth rate of 12-14%!! But if you see this table, we are far from achieving this target. Only in 2015 we were able to achieve this kind of growth rate and in 2019, it was negative 2.9%!!
And if we see the last 10 years, that is ten years into this initiative, manufacturing growth has in fact slowed to 5.5%, and its GDP share remains stagnant at 15-17% which is again far from the govt target of 25%!!
Secondly, we wanted to increase our exports, but did it increase? Yes, look at this, our exports have grown almost twice!! India's exports in 2014 stood at $317.545 billion, but as of 2023 it stood at $776.68 billion. But the catch over here is that, the objective of make in India was not just to increase exports, it was to increase exports as compared to our Imports but did it increase? No. Look at this, as of 2014, India spent 32.4 billion dollars more on imports and other outward payments than it's earning from exports and inward investments but by 2024 this number stood at 54.5 billion dollars!!
Thirdly, through Make in India, we wanted companies around the world to invest billions of dollars with foreign direct investment and FDI was supposed to shoot up, did it? Look at this chart,
While the gross investment by foreign companies has shot up from 46 to 71 billion dollars, at the same time, gross disinvestment has increased from 13.6 billion to 44.4 billion dollars!! So in short, more money is going out of India than it coming to India!!
And lastly, while we aimed to employ 100 million jobs in manufacturing, we have employed only 18.4 million people!!
So as responsible citizens, the right question to ask is not whether BJP has succeeded or not, but Why is India not succeeding?? And somehow this is something that mainstream media never throws light on!! Whereas the left only keep blaming without understanding the reasoning!! To prepared a complete case study on
Why is make in India failing?
What are the biggest underlying governance issues that are failing our manufacturing dream??
How is it causing us 1000s of crores in losses?
And most importantly, what are the solutions that we need to work to make India succeed??

Whether it’s opium, cocaine, marijuana or fentanyl, trafficking drugs earns the Sinaloa cartel an estimated three to twelve billion dollars per year. It’s a huge business, with more than 200,000 people in the region of Sinaloa alone, working directly or indirectly for organized crime.

We gained exceptional access to several factions of the Sinaloa cartel. In the heart of a clandestine laboratory, the “cooks” showed us how drugs are manufactured and then concealed in vehicles to enter the United States illegally. An important leader of the cartel, protected by his heavily armed men, also agreed to meet with us and explain how the organization works for us.

Hired killers, like El Guero, show us their daily life as a sicario. Before each new mission, he prays to the goddess of death. As an offering, he offers him bullets, with the names of the people he is to kill on them. In the poor neighborhoods of Culiacan, money from drug traffickers turns heads, like Jamilet’s. The young woman does everything possible to seduce a drug lord as a means out of poverty.

Among adolescents, too, joining the cartel is a dream. Many boys like Luis, 17, are ready to drop out of school to become a hit man. But tragedies are numerous. In the last 15 years, the drug war has claimed the lives of more than 230,000 people in Mexico. 2019 broke all records with 35,000 murders. These tragedies make funeral directors happy: Santos runs from crime scene to crime scene trying to get funeral contracts.

With more than 50,000 people ‘disappeared’, Isabel is a “researcher of corpses”. This morning, an informant slipped her the plan of a mass grave under her door, a new perilous mission begins…

This documentary was produced by Ligne de Front and directed by Vincent Prado. It was first released in 2020.

America's Surveillance State - This film dissects the United States' present surveillance condition. The thesis statement of the film is that privacy as we understand it is an antiquated fantasy - that we need to adjust our way of living to factor in that someone, somewhere is very likely watching our every move for one reason or another.

America's Surveillance State (2014)
Director: Danny Schechter
Stars: Michael German, Roy Singham, Sam Antar
Genre: Documentary
Country: United Kingdom
Language: English
Release Date: October 22, 2014 (United Kingdom)

Synopsis:
0:00 The Surveillance Machine
In today's society, who is watching whom? Explore the inner workings of surveillance in America.

25:07 Inside the NSA: How Do They Spy?
Episode two probes the inner workings of the United States' controversial National Security Agency - the NSA.

49:18 Rise of the Press
In a country that describes itself as a democracy and the leader of the free world it's an enormous problem for the government to know more about the people than the people know about what the government's doing. But since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 a lot of the legal restraints that kept the government in check after a previous era of abuse were relaxed or removed completely in many cases.

We examine the unique manufacturing ecosystem that has emerged, gaining access to the world’s leading hardware-prototyping culture whilst challenging misconceptions from the west. The film looks at how the evolution of “Shanzhai” – or copycat manufacturing – has transformed traditional models of business, distribution and innovation, and asks what the rest of the world can learn from this so-called “Silicon Valley of hardware".

HOLY LAND: STARTUP NATIONS (SERIES 2)
Premiering in February, the second season of WIRED’s Future Cities series takes us inside one of the world’s biggest startup nations. With the most tech startups and venture capital per capita in the world, Israel has long been hailed as The Startup Nation. WIRED’s four-part series will look beyond Tel Aviv’s vibrant, liberal tech epicentre to the wider Holy Land region – the Palestinian territories, where a parallel Startup Nation story is emerging in East Jerusalem, Ramallah and the West Bank, as well as in the Israeli cybersecurity hub of Beersheba. And we will learn how the fertile innovation ecosystem of Silicon Wadi has evolved as a result of its unique political, geographical and cultural situation and explore the future challenges – and solutions – these nations are facing.
