Over the past few decades, China has solidified its status as an economic superpower. But the country’s economic boom coupled with its increased military might has increased tensions in the region, including with Taiwan, where fears are mounting over a possible Chinese invasion.
Meanwhile, at home, China’s human rights record remains under the spotlight with severe curtailments on free speech and a continued hardline policy on the country’s Uighur community.
So what lies ahead?
Mehdi Hasan goes head-to-head with Victor Gao, the former translator for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, on President Xi Jinping's rule, China's foreign policy and its clampdown on dissent.
Joining the discussion are:
Rayhan Asat – international human rights lawyer of Uighur descent and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council
Stephen Chan – professor of world politics at the University of London, School of African and Oriental Studies
Martin Jacques – author of When China Rules the World and visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing

The US-China superpower rivalry is on full display in Taiwan. Beijing wants control of the island and is willing to use force to get it. Washington has been ambiguous about how it would respond but is expanding its military presence in the region. Taiwan is at the center of the US first island chain strategy to contain China. A standoff seems almost unavoidable. But what factors give the tiny island such an outsize importance for both superpowers? And why is neither side backing down?
We speak to foreign policy experts Victor Gao (Center for China and Globalization) and David Sacks (Council on Foreign Relations) and find out what people in Taiwan think of the tensions.

A new world order is taking shape before our eyes. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the extent to which great powers depend on strategic products. The persistent shortage of semiconductors—essential to our daily lives—is reshaping geopolitical relations, fueling inflation and increasing tensions between the U.S. and China.
It is estimated that 10 million cars worldwide were not produced in 2021 due to a lack of available semiconductors. From our computers to our toasters, from our tablets to our refrigerators, microprocessors, or semiconductors, power all our daily devices. They hold national strategic importance, supporting all advanced military and civilian technologies. Yet, while demand for both the quantity and quality of semiconductors has been growing, the number of places producing them has been shrinking. Only a few countries possess the specialized knowledge and capability to produce cutting-edge chips, with 63% of all chips manufactured in Taiwan.
That this one island, which is already on the frontline of a superpower struggle between the U.S. and China, dominates production means that the world’s economies are dependent on the stability of Taiwan. So what can be done to secure microprocessors? And how is the battle for semiconductors already affecting our daily lives?

In Thailand, Buddhism and the monks that lead the religion are deeply revered and hold a special place in Thai society. But a series of scandals involving corruption, adultery, drug use and even murder have undermined the religion’s moral authority.
This week on Foreign Correspondent the ABC’s South-East Asia Correspondent Lauren Day reports on the ever growing number of scandals engulfing the religion. She talks to the Thai police who are going undercover to hunt down badly behaving monks and she heads out on patrol with the Monk Police whose aim is to catch wayward monks and drag them into line.

With the ban on TikTok in the US imminent, are Chinese-linked e-commerce platforms next? The Biden administration is cracking down on de minimis shipments, closing a loophole that allows packages under $800 to avoid import duties and border scrutiny. Observers say this targets Chinese-linked companies, in particular Temu and Shein.
But this is just one of the measures that could curb Chinese shopping apps. The US government is also investigating allegations of data collection and forced labour. Meanwhile, environmentalists say that Chinese shopping apps are responsible for waste and emissions. China, however, argues that these are just further moves by Washington to enact unfair trade protections, aimed at limiting the growth of Chinese companies. Is the US-China trade war gunning for online shopping apps?
